FAQ
Why have a breastfeeding consultation before the baby is born?
Because it allows you to anticipate situations, clarify doubts, learn about physiology, identify risks (anatomical, personal), and realistically plan for the start of breastfeeding.
What will I learn or prepare for in this consultation?
- The importance of skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth.
- How to facilitate correct latching from the very first moment.
- The importance of mother-baby rooming-in.
- Realistic expectations about milk supply, feeding frequency, and adaptation.
- Strategies for dealing with common challenges (first feedings, baby adaptation, family support).
Does this consultation guarantee that I will be able to breastfeed?
There are no absolute guarantees because every mother and baby are unique.
But advance preparation gives you more information, confidence, and support, which will increase the likelihood of success and help you better cope with challenges.
When does it make sense to make this inquiry?
Ideally in the last few weeks of pregnancy, because you will have enough time to reflect, prepare your expectations, and share with those who will be with you after the birth (partner, family).
Do I need to have everything planned out before giving birth?
No. The consultation serves to prepare you by providing information tailored to you and your individual/family characteristics.
What really matters is being open to learning and adapting.
What if it's a second or third pregnancy? Is it still worth it?
Yes. Every baby is different. Even those who have already breastfed can benefit: remembering concepts, redefining expectations, and adapting strategies to the new reality.
If there are complications (C-section, need for mother-baby separation, premature baby, etc.), does the consultation help?
Yes. It’s part of the plan.
We discuss alternatives such as pumping, weaning, maintaining milk production, and emotional support, preparing strategies tailored to your situation.
How long does the appointment last and what do I need to bring?
Typical duration: approximately 60–90 minutes.
It may be useful to bring a notebook (to write down questions), and if you wish, your partner or support person, so that everyone can be involved in the decision and preparation.
Does the consultation replace postpartum support?
No. The consultation prepares you; postpartum support remains essential.
Latching, milk production, the baby’s adaptation, and daily challenges require ongoing, individualized, and empathetic support, but this does not mean that a postpartum consultation is necessary.
